With the holidays approaching, one generous thing you can do for any visiting family members or friends is to set up a guest bathroom that checks all the clean and comfortable boxes. I put together a list of 5 things that can make your guest bathroom work for your guests, and for you.

In our home, the second bedroom has a bathroom that isn’t attached, but instead in between the bedroom and the kitchen. It makes it the natural bathroom to use during our game nights with friends, or anyone planning to stay the night. I keep this guest bathroom up to par and fresh with these 5 key tips.

Okay, lets paint the picture. Have you ever been to someone’s house, or even worse a public bathroom stall, and needed more TP? What if there were no soap or clean towels?? It can feel uncomfortable to ask for hygiene products when you’re in a pinch.

Here’s a relatable scenario… how about when you’re out at a bar downtown anywhere? Sometimes nice places will have mints, hairspray, a lady standing there to give you paper towels, bandaids, whatever! Or have you been to a ski resort and had an emergency aunt flow situation and ran into a bathroom expecting to stuff your underwear with scratchy TP, only to find the ski gods looked down on you and provided baskets full of pads and tampons?!

Or on the other hand, have you really had to use the restroom and the one you had to use is dirty, stinky, no soap, toilet paper squares on the floor and water drips everywhere? No thank you. I’ll hold it.

The Guest Bathroom Checklist

It’s such a nice feeling to be thought of when you are the guest, and I want my guests to have that same feeling in my house. Having a few essential items on hand will keep your guests happy and feel taken care of whenever they come over.

1. Poo-Pouri. This doesn’t just apply to guest bathrooms either. Why every person on earth doesn’t have Poo-Pouri for their bathroom is a giant mystery to the world. Nobody wants to stink up your bathroom! Nobody wants their bathrooms (noticeably) stunk up. A couple of quick sprays when you walk in is a total game-changer.

2. Essential hygiene items. Yup. Toilet paper needs to be stocked. If the person who generally uses the bathroom is a boy, don’t expect them to remember that girls need toilet paper EVERYTIME, while guys need it only a couple of times a day. There are tons of storage options for toilet paper now. I always appreciate when it’s stacked up somewhere within reach, vs waddling around with my pants down looking in cabinets. That’s just me though.

On top of that, having a secret pad and tampon supply for women is incredibly necessary. I don’t think I need to sell you on this one, because most of us have lived through a situation that taught us the hard way.

3. That leads me to #3. A clean trashcan with a lid. If you have a hose at home, maybe spray out your trashcans with it every so often with some dish soap. The lid is for privacy. Nobody needs to see the inner workings of a bathroom trashcan.

4. These last two go hand in hand. Pun intended. But lets start with hand soap. In any bathroom, it’s required. Here are my favorites:

5. Last but not least, a clean hand towel. I’ll also add the absence of your own used towels, for hands or otherwise. Here are some of my favorites:

I love a good waffle knit towel. These one's look so soft but add texture too.

There you have it! The checklist for a quick guest bathroom refresh before the holidays. Or for anytime really. Happy Holidays!
