New House Primary Bedroom Design

Deciding on A Small Primary Bedroom Design Direction

Here we are, 2 weeks from move day and I only have a very small idea of what we are going to do with our small primary bedroom in the new house.

To start with, Brandon and I have two different home design styles that can be difficult to blend. He loves modern style, and if he had his way every single thing would be black, high gloss, and minimal. Although I like the look of that style, I don’t love the feel of it, especially in a bedroom. I like home to feel comfortable and relaxing. My style tends to be a little bit warmer, with natural materials, and a cozy feel. He thinks too many vintage items is a little creepy. We need to find balance, haha.

The new house style is 100% Early American, and definitely has old country farmhouse charm. So I’m trying to walk the line between honoring all the character in the house, and making it feel fresh, new, modern, and comfortable.

Making an old 1920s Pennsylvania home modern is probably not the best way to go unless you really wanted to gut the whole house, which isn’t in the plans for right now. Or probably ever. It can be done, but I don’t want to take away the character of the home either. I’m excited to blend everyone’s style and make this house feel like *ours.* Said every blogger, ever.

Since I pretty much have creative freedom when it comes to our house – Brandon did put in a request to have a black painted main bedroom. Not urbane bronze, not iron ore, but a true dark black. I’m still trying to convince him to consider Iron Ore, but I don’t think we’ll know for sure until we’re in the house and putting samples on the wall. I used to work at Sherwin Williams and I will never not get a paint sample now – lighting matters!

I don’t have any photos of the bedroom empty, although it is first on my list once we arrive! It is maybe 12” x 14,” with two large windows. So TONS of light. There is one closet that, right now, has missing bifold doors. It takes up the width of the room and is a pretty good size. So design dilemmas are storage space, incorporating black walls, AND last but not least designing around a radiator heater box.

I actually still have a lot of radiator questions but I’ll save that for another blog post…. does it need a cover? Can I paint it? Can I remove it? Will I burn myself on it? Can I have furniture close to it without getting damaged?! I truly need answers. Let me know in the comments if you have some!

Main Bedroom Inspiration Photos

Here are some bedroom inspiration pics that we both like the look & feel of. Seen first on stories!

Primary Bedroom Design Mood Board

And below we have the almost finished mood board:

I still haven’t picked out a good rug, and I’m not 100% on those curtains yet. The mood board was supposed to tie it all together for me visually and I still don’t feel sure about any of it. I want to have the *click* moment where the design comes together. But the bedroom is where we have made our first and only purchase, which is the bed! The bedframe is this one:

It has drawers on it which I’m hoping will help us with our storage needs. The color is listed as beige so I’m curious to see how close the color is in person compared to the photos.

I’d also like to get a solid three drawer dresser/nightstand for one side of the bed to keep more clothes in. I’d love to get two but I’m thinking there wont be enough room for both sides of the bed.

Here are the dressers I have in my Amazon Cart right now as a couple options for our bedside dresser. I am OBSESSED with the wood tone with the fluting at the bottom, but I don’t think that it’s going to work as well with the design as a black one would. I’m picturing a warmer tone black on the walls with a crispy stark black bedside dresser.

I also found a bunch of bedding and blankets that I am loving, but I wont order anything until we get there and start seeing all the pieces come together. I was looking for duvet’s with texture, and blankets that would be great for layering. These are my favorites from Amazon.

Those blankets look so comfy and all had great reviews! Most come in several different color options as well. Plus if you watch my stories you know I love to hoard blankets. Nothing like adding a few more, right?

Aside from the furniture, we need to nail down the paint for the walls and trim. After that, make a plan for the closet doors.

Thank you for being here! Let me know what you think of the design plans and be sure to follow along on Insta for the behind-the-scenes moments as well.
