So it finally happened, I was officially #influenced by the amazing ChrislovesJulia Instagram IGTV of how to make your own poster DIY.

I’ve been finally getting around to hanging up the art and photos in my apartment. Getting to do some finishing touches makes me happy because it’s that little bit of personalization that makes a rental feel like home.

I had a poster frame that was 18″x 24″ from Walmart that I had never filled in my previous apartment. I had a perfect space for it next to my TV but needed something simple, modern, and neutral to fill it. I looked for some prints and posters on different sites and landed on Amazon because I figured it would be the most affordable, and Amazon has everything.

I ended up finding this print. It was exactly what I was looking for EXCEPT… I was weirdly confused on how few options there were for that poster size, plus paying for a piece of paper was not what I felt like doing. **Queue college flashbacks** I didn’t want something that probably tons of other people had. I know. I’m a brat.

SO the next thing that came to mind was that little tutorial I had watched and I thought, ok, that I CAN do. Luckily I already had all the supplies on hand to make this Amazon look-alike poster DIY.

Poster DIY Supplies

  • Paints – whatever colors you want, I used white, brown, black(not pictured), and grey
  • Cardboard/Paper plate/whatever you have
  • A Dinner Plate
  • Paint Brushes
  • Poster Frame

Poster DIY Directions

  1. The first thing I did was make the base color as close to a greige as possible. Use your cardboard to mix your paints to the desired color. I think I used too much brown and got more of an orangey tan color but hey – its ART. Also, I painted right over the plastic “glass” piece. It took 2 coats to cover since it was a shiny & smooth surface.
  2. Next, after my base coat dried (I let it dry overnight, but probably not necessary. Just test it.) I traced my dinner plate in the middle of the poster to get the center circle. I had to try a couple of different sizes that I had in my pantry but the 11″ dinner plate worked perfectly for my 18″ x 24″ poster. I “traced” by using the other end of my paintbrush to make a faint line in the paint. A pencil would work too.
  3. Then I added the half circles to either side of the middle circle, again, by tracing the plate. I was just copying the pattern from the picture on Amazon.
  4. Then I added my lines! There was no trick to this, except I would recommend not chugging a Diet Coke beforehand because my hands were shaking like crazy and line work is pretty tedious. Shoutouts to my tattoo artist. Bless up. I did work from the straightest point in the middle and then tried to follow that line, vs trying to work off of a curve. A few of mine ended up kind of wonky but remember *A*R*T*
  5. Tada! I let it dry and hung it up, the more I stare at it the more I want to go in and fix things, but I’m happy with it for now and it came out exactly how I wanted it. A unique piece! and Brandon says he likes that I put a creative touch on the decor so that’s a double win.

I spent $0 on this project because I had all the supplies on hand, but you could make this for $20 on the frame, and $15-$20 on the paints/brushes depending on your colors. A total of $35-$40!
Let me know if you try this poster DIY! I would love to see all of your creations.
