Our Apartment Primary Bedroom – One Room Challange Week #1
Spring One Room Challenge Week #1
My first ever One Room Challenge post! To see other rooms, follow this link to the One Room Challenge website.
I can’t believe I signed up for something like this since it is totally out of my comfort zone to commit to one room to completion. I’m excited!
Since we are moving in just a few short months, I almost let myself off the hook and skipped this challenge. Instead, I’m going to use the opportunity to get some of our old clutter cleared out and freshen up a space, AND THEN bring that design with us to the new house. I decided the primary bedroom would be the perfect room.
Our primary bedroom has been on my list the entire time I’ve lived in this apartment, but I always ended up deciding against it because there seemed to be better ways to spend the home décor budget since nobody sees our bedroom anyways.
I think the primary bedroom will be a great way for Brandon and me to choose décor styles together that will carry into the new house. Most of the existing bedroom furniture was Brandon’s, including the bed frame, so I want to make sure he is comfortable and confident with the new design before I totally change everything he has ever bought. lol. Whoops!
Here is the room today! In all its glory. It honestly just looks like a regular old apartment bedroom with IKEA furniture, which is exactly what it is.
ORC Week #1 Design Plans for Primary Bedroom
There are four weak points in the room that I want to address. The bed frame, the dressers, the lamps, and the desk area.
The bed frame is very wobbly and squeaky. Every time one of us wakes up to use the restroom we wake the other up because of how squeaky it is. I’m talking the wood slats are BENDING and it’s LOUD. We have been planning to get rid of this IKEA bed and buy a new one for the new house. So, not a huge loss if my DIY headboard doesn’t turn out. HA. But if it does turn out, I will be happy to have saved some money and have a beautiful new headboard. Who knew that bedframes were thousands of dollars? I do now.
Anyways, I really love the curves of my inspiration photos below, and I’m thinking I can accomplish the same thing with foamboard and backing, covered with a nice Sherpa fabric. I’m keeping my expectations low, but holy cow I love this idea and if I nail it I will never stop posting the photos.
Next up are the dressers. We have a 6-drawer dresser and a 5-drawer dresser. Plus, a very small closet AND Brandon uses his nightstand drawers for clothes as well. None of the dressers match and our 2 nightstands are different heights because of it.
What I want to do is give the Hemnes dresser a modern upgrade by adding detail to the drawers, new handles, and update the legs. By choosing those specific upgrades, I can apply the same technique to all 3 dressers and create a matching set! Plus, adding legs to the nightstand will make it taller, and more even with mine. It will balance out the room just that much more.
I don’t think I’ve ever complained about nightstand table lamps until this house. Our existing lamps are pretty standard run-of-the-mill Walmart lamps. Skinny silver base with a dirty white shade that gets the job done. Plus, Brandon stays up late reading oftentimes and we have yet to find him a reading light that works well for both of us.
So, my solution is to try the puck light hack. I think it’s a genius idea and I love the fact that it is renter-friendly AND I can take them with us when we move since nothing is hard-wired. Win-win 😀 I found these light sconces on Amazon that are exactly what I was picturing in my head. I’m hoping they look just as good in real life.
Finally, the desk area. I love it and I hate it. I love that I have the space in our room to have a 2-monitor desk without it being too crowded. On the other hand, a lot of my work things end up piling up and make the whole bedroom feel messy and cluttered. To define the space as its own separate area, I’m going to add a rug under the desk and chair. Something light and neutral, and on sale. I found this target rug and ordered it already. I’m hoping it does the trick. The rug in addition to the recently added curtain panels I hung makes the desk wall feel more open.
Here is the mood board for the room! I hate to even post something that feels like it’s in such the beginning stages of an idea but I’m going to put it all out here anyways.
