Every time I go camping with my mom’s side of the family, I make sure I don’t go empty-handed. The past few years they have taken their airstream to an amazing campsite in Vail, CO, so I make sure I make the trip up! I want to bring the best camping snacks, so my go-to snack to make ahead of time and bring with me is Puppy Chow. You can find another make-ahead camping food option here.

Some might know puppy chow as a more delicious, homemade version of “muddy buddies.” It’s easy to store and easy to eat, and definitely one of those treats that you wonder if it’s actually made of crack? Just a sprinkle?

I would have to say my all-time favorite part of making puppy chow, besides eating it, is the smell that starts pouring from the kitchen when you start melting butter, chocolate, and peanut butter together. Huge key to success with this recipe is not letting the mixture burn to the saucepan. Even on medium heat everything melts pretty fast and needs constant stirring. Burning the chocolate is literally the only way that this recipe can get messed up. I’ve done it. 🙁 That, or getting a hole in the grocery bag when shaking the powdered sugar onto your chocolatey Chex. #doublebag it!

If you like chocolate, peanut butter, and crunchy snacks, you will love this Chex trail mix (crack) recipe.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Stick of Butter
  • 1 bag of Chocolate Chips
  • 1/4 c of Peanut Butter
  • 1 box of Rice Chex Cereal
  • 3/4 bag of Powdered Sugar

DIRECTIONS

  1. Add the butter, chocolate chips, and peanut butter to a pan on medium heat until melted and smooth. Stir constantly so the chocolate chips don’t burn to the bottom.
  2. Dump the box of Rice Chex into a large mixing bowl.
  3. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Rice Chex.
  4. Stir the Chex until its coated with the chocolate mixture.
  5. Double bag some Walmart/Grocery bags – make sure there are no holes in the bags – and dump in the chocolate covered Chex.
  6. Pour half the bag of powdered sugar in with the Chex, shake the bag. Like you mean it! I like to hold the top and smack the bottom to kind of toss it all together.
  7. Continue adding more powdered sugar until you’ve reached your desired amount. I generally use almost a full bag, or about 3/4 bag.

You’re done!! Store in a lidded bowl or large ziplock baggie for up to a week.
